CHEEKY APPLE CLONER Psystar is further pushing its luck with the men in gray suits at Cupertino by offering reck-mounted machines preinstalled with the Leopard Server OS.
The Openserv 1100, which bears a striking resemblance to Apple's own Xserve kit, comes i a 1U rackmountable form with an Intel Xeon E5420 Harpertown 2.5GHz Quad-Core Processor, 4GB of fully-buffered DDR2 667 RAM and one 750GB 7200RPM SATA drive. Storage can be pumped up to 4TB by filling all four drive bays.
The Openserv 2400 comes in a 2U stylee with a similar spec but with six bays.
We can't quite work out why Apple hasn't jumped all over this yet but Psystar's insistence that they are doing nothing wrong, and the company's opinion that Apple's EULA violates anti-trust laws, might just be stopping the legal eagles from baring their talons. µ

what does that mean? The interface was unreliable?

Apple is just making sure that there legal ducks are all in a row...they would not like to see a ruling that negates their EULA. Even if it was a short while until they appealed there would be 50 more companies just like Psystar.

And there is no way that Apple wants to compete in the PC market...they've stayed out of the race to the bottom so far, they will probably continue to do so.
Hey, I've been a geek a long time now and can still remember how opposed pc and mac camps were to each other back in the day. Heck, I HATED macs.

On the other hand I would like an alternative to Windows. I've tried the current incarnation of Ubuntu linux and found the interface itself unreliable so it went pretty quickly.

The fact that I've tried and palyed with OSX as a formed mac hater shows how far Apple has come. If they were to release this on the market today for pcs, I'd have to say I'd purchase a copy.
No customer of Psystar has a prayer: Apple cripples all jailbreak'd devices, always, every time.

They aren't subject to anti-competitive laws, they are Apple.

Count the days, people..

They are being a bit cheeky, but I don't see what's wrong with them selling an Apple licence. Isn't this ok to do? Can't they buy from Apple and sell them on, like shops do with Windows etc?
actually i don't think that this is more taunting than the desktops openmacs, considering that the macosx server eula allows virtualisation...
Apple is a legal hound, they'd sue a person for simply eating an apple and looking a PC at the same time.

Psystar must be on to something here, and if so, this can only be good for the world.

Bring OS X to the masses, please and thank you.
Screw Apple for being so pious with their oh so holy OS anyway.

Still, I wouldn't buy a psystar (he, he).
I've been asking myself the same thing for weeks now, why isn't Steve and Co stopping them. The only thing I can think of is, either the case is forming, or they're letting Psystar test the waters to see how viable another Mac OEM market would be.
In the 90's OEM's were doing a better job with price\performance releasing Mac's so Apple was losing major revenue. With Steve they're actually competitive with like configured PC's at their price points. Making extra money through licensing might be the reason.
It's doesn't matter how many PC's Psystar sells since they can consider each sale a violation. It doesn't cost them anything by just waiting. Plus the Apple brand is very strong. Right now we wont see a ton of people flock to an OEM that might be sued and go out of business. And the best reason Psystar PC's don't look as good. The pricing isn't lucrative enough for people to spend that kind of money.
Has anyone actually bought one of these to prove this isn't a hoax / scam?
I wonder how much farther Apple is going to let them go before they launch a suit....

i really hope apple changes their EULA but until then I am staying clear of this.

I still thought it was cool when I got OSX tiger to run on my pc but that was more a geeky "I can too make it work"....kept if for less than 24hrs.
Sweet, a floppy drive too! You don't see that will Apple hardware. Come on Apple, get with the program.
Is it me or does this look a lot like the current Dell 29xx range of servers?
