THE GLORIOUS People's Republic of China has shut down 44,000 websites its revolutionary guards have identified as porn and arrested 868 people.
The move is an attempt by Beijing to cleanse the country of anything that might be embarrassing before the Beijing Olympics in August.
In addition to the arrests more than 1,911 people have received unspecified "penalties".
According to the Xinhua news agency the campaign would continue until September, although one would have wondered why they would not have finished purging by then.
Pornography, as is known in the rest of the world, is illegal in China which has been banning sites for ages. That which exists is tamer than a drugged Labrador, but one area which has been making gains are cyber-sex sites which are a bit of a grey area. It is possible that the crack-down has focused on these.

Vas, you talk of CORRUPTION a lot.

Don't you realise corruption will flourish where agreements by consenting adults have been criminalised by people like yourself. You rarely get courruption with murder and rape, but with drug use, prostitution and porn many will turn a blind eye, especially for personal gain, as THEY ARE NOT REALLY CRIMES are they?

Do think about the consequences before you try to impose your personal ideals onto others - they might (thankfully) have a different point of view.
-Internet Porn is a plague and does not really offer anything useful

Do you not have a Penis or some thing?
But by all means, invest in our country, the good ol' USA. We love China, and we love it so much that we're willing to ignore our stated goals of world freedom and democracy (stated just recently today in the world economic forum by Condi Rice) so that our totalitarian "friends" can continue bribing us with virtually free stuff.
It seems some of you people above love to generalize

There is a line between freedom and the misuse of Freedom.

Crossing that line has nothing to do with Freedom...Its CORRUPTION

Companies use Internet Porn as a cheap dirty way to gain more money because they know sex sells .

A lot of children become victims of the dirty things these companies sell which is UNETHICAL and IMMORAL and is forbidden by most nations in this planet

I hope i CAN live in a society without porn at all

But the thing i can not stand is when companies sell their dirty materials for becoming richer...

And when companies try using people like sheep
and
when the -sheep- thinks that this is freedom...
I understand a communist country's fear of religeon due to their atheistic stance, but why should they fear or be embarrassed by nudity?

The worse embarrassment should be the treatment of their citizens.

I'm sure that they wish to welcome the world, but the world would feel more welcomed if Chinese citizens are not displaced and disrupted on the Olympics behalf.

That is the spirit of sharing of peoples to which the Olympics aspire IMHO.
Pornography is a big legit industry in the west. If you think its bad, don't use it, but you can't force your ideologies and way of life onto other people.
Whats next? Ban smoking, alcohol, junk food, video games... because they are bad? Where do you draw the line and who decides?
Fight Internet porn? You don't realise the problems with that? How do you fight it? Forbidding it and doing communist/fascist-style purges hand in hand with total electronic surveillance? Nothing less will work... I could live without porn, but I wouldn't want to live in a society like that...
Internet Porn is a plague and does not really offer anything useful

Certain unethical individuals try to sell sex so they become richer...and also many kids become victims of these kind of site

-As some wise man said:
Where Porn exists there is also corruption...

Bravo to China.
I hope other countries start fighting internet porn as well
