AOL forced to let customers go AWOL

Whew
Thursday, 12 July 2007, 11:04
PEOPLE who tried to leave the AOL dial up service will now find it a lot easier, after the firm agreed to settle with every state in the Union apart from New York and Florida.

When people tired of AOL they found it hard to terminate their accounts and still discovered they were being billed for services from the ISP.

But AOL has agreed to a $3 million settlement with 48 states and Washington DC, avoiding the lawsuit that would undoubtedly have ensued.

People who tried to cancel found themselves at the end of a line which never was terminated, while, according to the Wall Street Journal, sales reps argued with customers who tried to cancel as they could earn money by keeping the accounts live.

Now AOL will have to stump up money to people who were charged fees after they cancelled. ยต
