RATHER THAN just bury them in the ground, companies are looking for a more environmentally friendly way to dispose of PCs. Specialist recycler, Newmarket IT plans has just received $50 million in private equity funding.

Its first task is to remove sensitive data from an ageing PC's hard disk then refurbish it for resale. Half of Newmarket's business involve this process which extends the life of a PC beyond what large enterprises are willing to support.

The rest of the business involves stripping PCs of any components that can be resold as spare parts. The company counts Dell and Hewlett-Packard among its major customers.

Jeff Ziegler, the CEO, claims his rivals often merely dump old PCs in foreign countries with looser requirements on materials handling. µ

This is not news.

PC Recyclé, in Montreal Canada has done it for YEARS ! And they didn't need 50M$ to do it, and they have done it to help the cause of teaching computer technology in third world countries such as El Salvador.
