The pair teamed up to say that the PC was not dying, it was just entering a new era.
They happened to say this as beancounters IDC reported that worldwide PC shipment growth slowed to 12.9 percent in the first quarter from 15.9 percent a year earlier.
Some believe that the slow-up is because a lot of the technology is moving off PCs and into other gadgets.
But in their column, Gates and Otellini argue that the PC has expanded far beyond its original use to become much more than just a sophisticated tool for creating documents and spreadsheets.
Today, we use it as a communication device, a radio, a TV, a movie theatre and a photo album, they collectively said.
And, as such, Wintel notebooks last year far outsold the infinitely less versatile iPod the pair pointed out, rather daftly.
