Fourth telecom cable taken out in the Middle East

Old saying: once is an accident, twice is coincidence...
Mon Feb 04 2008, 12:26

INTERNET SERVICES in the Middle East continue to be disrupted as another telecom cable, this one between Qatar and the UAE, was taken out on Sunday.

This was the fourth telecom cable outage to occur in the region within just a few days. However, unlike the other three incidents thought to have been cable cuts, this cable was reportedly taken out of service due to a power system problem.

A regional business news website reported that its knowledgeable source said this latest cable problem is anticipated to take at least "a few days" to be fixed.

Qatar's Internet access was disrupted by this cable outage over the weekend, but the loss of capacity was reportedly below 40 per cent due to the continued availability of alternate routes.

The impact on Internet access in the UAE was unclear, but UAE telecom service Etisalat is expected to release a statement today.

There's more about this latest telecom cable outage in the Persian Gulf as well as the three previous cable cuts in the Middle East region here. µ

Don't Inq readers watch USA spy films?

Oh, c'mon. The armchair cloak & dagger fanboys have been speculating for literally years about the loss of HumInt the USA spy community is expected to experience as soon as the rest of the world creates significant optical links that do NOT pass through the continental USA. The obvious answer to this possibility, is for USA spooks to install the appropriate data splitter(s) whilst any such link is being constructed. "Oops! We already missed five links? Well, perhaps we'll have an accidental line break or power outage. Then we can gain physical access to the link endpoints." So who is doing the repair and upgrade work? Haliburton? And who is providing security and support services? Blackwater?

It is good time now for someone to start marketing VSAT services

It is good time now for someone to start marketing VSAT services :)

It took me about 30 minutes to open your main page, and another 30 minutes to open this page…

Meanwhile I will take out the dust of my old books

BTW there is a small place you never mention called Jordan, and the Interner here is way too bad also.

The old saying...

More usually rendered as:

Once is happenstance.
Twice is circumstance.
Three times is enemy action.

No word on "four times", though...
