DNS charges shock elderly hack

Apoplectic rant narrowly avoided
Tue Feb 20 2007, 10:10
DNSSTUFF has been my favourite site for years (apart from that one with the donkeys) and I was dismayed - nay, shocked - to discover this morning that the site has sold out to Mammon and is now asking for $36 a year to subscribe.

So aggrieved was I that I was poised to write a damning indictment of the rampant spread of greed on the Internet, when I noticed the small print: "Scroll down for continued access to standard set of tools. Yeah, this is pretty lame, huh? You should really consider becoming a member."

And it was indeed with relief that I discovered that all my favourite DNS tools are still there at the bottom of the page, free. For the $36 - which the site helpfully points out works out at the price of two pints of milk a week - you get access to all sorts of extra tools and increased self-esteem.

One must applaud the way in which DNSstuff is continuing to offer people - at least those who take the time to read the small print - its basic service free of charge. One must also respect the charming and amusing way in which it is asking for money, but one must berate them for momentarily increasing my blood pressure to dangerously-high levels.

But if you're feeling replete with cash, why not pop along to www.dnsstuff.com and hand over the readies? Milk's bad for you anyway. µ
