PURVEYOR of digital entertainment chips and bits Silicon Image has bought Sci-worx in a bid to improve its system-on-a-chip (SoC) business.

The move cost Silicon Image more than $13.5 million in bank notes.

Sci-work is an intellectual property (IP) and design service outfit which specialises in multimedia, communications, and networking software.

Silicon is after Sci-worx's design capabilities in the storage, distribution and presentation of high-definition (HD)content and especially its large collection of patents. The outfit has 18 registered and pending patents and more than 50 video and image processing, wireline communications, security and bus interface products.

In a press release Steve Tirado, president and CEO of Silicon Image said the acquisition means that his outfit can build better home entertainment gear in the future. µ
