When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite - Winston Churchill
A typical example of students today, the Everywhere Girl has been spolit [Surely, spoilt? Ed.] by her parents telling her she's "special".
"We need to stop endlessly repeating 'You're special' and having children repeat that back," boffin, professor Jean Twenge of San Diego State University, said. "Kids are self-centered enough already."
Twenge and her colleagues, had mulled a sample of some 16,475 college students and found them to be the most spoilt generation ever.
They say the study is the largest of its type and reckon the "self-esteem movement" that kicked off in the 1980s had gone too far.
"Unfortunately, narcissism can also have very negative consequences for society, including the breakdown of close relationships with others," Twenge warned. Narcissists are, "at risk for infidelity, lack emotional warmth, and to exhibit game-playing, dishonesty, and over-controlling and violent behaviors."
The Everywhere Girl should avoid the temptation of taking a plunge into Myspace and stick to blogging, the boffin warned. "Current technology fuels the increase in narcissism," Twenge said. "By its very name, Myspace encourages attention-seeking, as does Youtube." ยต
