Sony updates consoles

160GB PS3, PSP-3000 and more
Thu Aug 21 2008, 10:18

SONY HAS ANNOUNCED a slew of updates for both the Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable.

A new PS3 SKU will come with a 160GB hard drive - twice as large as the 80GB drive being offered with current PS3s, and 40GB larger than Microsoft's largest Xbox 360 offering.

The new PS3 will hit US retail in November and come bundled with a copy of Drake's Fortune for $499, but will retail for €449 in Europe without the additional game.

It will be available in Europe and the UK on October 31st.

The Playstation Portable has also had an update of its own - the PSP-3000 SKU will come with a much improved screen, a built-in mic and functioning Skype software.

The home button has also been moved on the new model, and this new PSP will eventually replace the incumbent PSP-2000 SKU.

It seems Sony isn't resting on its laurels concerning the evolution of the PSP - shame about the continued absence of triple-A games.

Sony also announced a wireless keyboard that attaches to the PS3 controller, similar to what Microsoft provided for the Xbox 360 sometime ago.

Interestingly, the pad has a Touch Pad button that turns the entire keypad surface into a touch pad, apparently allowing for more intuitive use of the Playstation 3 web browser. µ

No pics?

You guys really should have put up some pictures of the wireless keyboard.

It looks hilariously awkward, but may actually work...

hard drive prices

One of the thing that gets me with Sony and Microsoft is how much they charge extra for different size hard drive models of there consoles hard drives are so cheap these days i don't see how they get away with charging so much i would expect a 320 gig drive for what a kiddie console cost.

Better upgrade

I'd rather have 512 or 1024 MB RAM in a PS3 that 160 GB of disk. Sony made it very easy to get Linux running on the PS3, and I do that, but 256 MB RAM is not really enough.

Something missing from this artucle

Τhe 160 version will be limited-edition and more expensive from the other versions

Also just like the 80GB version it will not have backwards compatibility for PS2 games

$499 vs €499

If I were a gamer in Europe I would be boycotting Sony.

The price difference alone is a slap in the face but without a game they gave you a kick to the b*lls too.
