Wooo battles the Wii for the daftest name

Blu-hoo Wooo
Tuesday, 20 May 2008, 08:45

THE MARKETING people at Hitachi have had a bit of a scout round and decided that Nintendo has done really well in the console market because it used a daft name.

So when, Hitachi came to release its latest Blu-ray player it decided the best thing to follow a Wii is a good Wooo.

Besides a daft name, the Wooo DV BH250, is a fairly interesting machine with up to 250GB of space. It has an HDMI output and will compress the HD signal with AVCREC so that you can record onto normal DVDs as well..

The player joins Wooo-branded tellies already on sale in Japan.

Obviously the marketing people are a bit unsure if Europeans will buy a product with such a daft name. The brand will initially be used on the Japanese market where Wooos and Wiis are standard fare, particularly after sushi and saki. µ

Unsure about Europeans ?

I protest against this slur on Euro intelligence. We are just as sheepish and stupid as the rest of the world, and nothing has stopped us from buying Wiis in droves.
Bring on the Woos ! We'll buy them by the crate !

Daft?

I guess in world ruled by branding and marketing calling Wii a daft name is not a sign of intelligence. Then again it's not expected...
