A nice chap had two notebooks and booted two machines, one with a mechanical hard drive and the second with solid state drive. The test showed only a five second difference.
It seems the marchitecture might not be that exciting and big hard disk chaps such as Seagate or Maxtor won't even bother with it, at least not for the time being.
It is a question of cost, as you have to pay hundreds of dollars for 32GB flash drive at a time when a 80GB notebook drive costs way below $100. Will people cough up so much extra for a few minutes more battery life? I just don't think so.
We also talked with some memory chaps and we learned that the prices of the faster solid state drives have to be astronomical. It will cost you up to $500 to build a 32GB Solid state drive and you can just imagine the retail price. It looks like this marchitecture will be on hold until the price of flash memory begins to fall. µ
