HD-TV prices plummet

Dealers cut prices on HD-TVs

US television makers are slashing the price of their HD-TVs in the run up to Yule.

A price war between the purveyors of plasma and the makers of LCD televisions has been simmering for a while now. According to Business Week, prices are now the lowest they have ever been. Wide-screen, 50-inch plasma televisions from the likes of Toshiba and HP can be found online for less than $2,000. Sony's entry-level, 50-inch LCD is being flogged for $1,348 and Samsung's 50-inch Digital Light Processor (DLP) set is being advertised for $1,135.

Business Week says that since August, the average price of 40 to 44-inch tellies has dropped nine per cent.

The reason for the fall in prices is mostly due to the evolution of LCD screens which are now at a size and price comparable to plasma.
