Taiwanese threaten Chinese chip CEO with jail

And a huge fine
Monday, 5 July 2004, 11:32
A REPORT IN Business Week claimed that the CEO of Shanghai foundry Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) got a fax from the Taiwanese government threatening him with a $750,000 fine and two years in a Taipei jail.

The reason for the summons, according to the report, is because the government alleges he's broken Taiwanese government rules on investing on the mainland.

But, said CEO Richard Chang, he's got the summons because Taiwan doesn't want to see the mainland take away the lucrative foundry business from its own contenders, TSMC and UMC. ยต
