Solar cell shortage prompts price rise

Silicon short because of increased demand

SHORTAGES of polycrystalline silicon have prompted price rises of solar cells by up to five per cent.

According to nikkei.net, Kyocera and a raft of other manufacturers including Sharp and Sanyo have raised their prices.

According to the wire, prices of polycrystalline silicon have jumped by between 30 to 40 per cent in 2006 for two years in a row.

The shortage has been promptd by increased demand for PV cells - global production rose by 45 per cent in 2005 according to the wire. µ
