Dell boss offers staff five extra days off

Unpaid, that is
Wednesday, 5 November 2008, 11:09

THE BIG MAN at Dell sent off an email to employees this Tuesday suggesting they take an extra five days of unpaid vacations this year to help the company weather the storm, says Reuters.

Jess Blackburn, speaking for the company, told Reuters "We are asking employees on a voluntary basis to consider taking off (up to) five days... as unpaid time off as a flexible way to reduce costs for the company." Other measures the company has taken include offering "voluntary severance packages" and "a global hiring freeze" states Reuters.

Meanwhile the company is developing new business strategies to cope with the Cloud computing services which Dell believes to be the next big thing in IT. Emerging markets are also on the menu, but they didn’t get into that.

Mikey Dell and his bone saw are in the last leg of the 8,900 person layoff programme, a necessary measure, says the CEO, considering the weak global demand. This is part of a bigger programme to slash operating costs and save the company $3 billion over the next three years.

Naturally, Dell shares are on the rise.

Better than getting laid off

Before anybody flames this idea of people being asked to take a week off, unpaid, remember it's better than having to lay off people.

At least employees are being giving the option to take small hit vs getting canned. Although if the market change is permanent, this step only postpones the inevitable.

not temporary!

As taxes on business's go up (which they will) and capitol gains taxes go up (which they will)...... then these temporary measures will become permanent!

The USA already has the 2nd highest corporate taxes in the world..... business's are already leaving now partly because of our corporate tax rates. Add higher taxes, things will get worse!

www.fairtax.org ....... our solution........
