Myspace deletes burn victim photos
SOCIAL NOTWORKING SITE Myspace has deleted pictures of an 18-month-old boy who was burned in a fire because someone found them offensive.
The photos were placed on the site by the boy's parents and as part of a support group for burn victims. The snaps did not show blisters or anything too nasty, just a startling but dramatic shot of BJ McCombs.
Rather than question what sort of sicko complains about pictures like this and telling them to go forth and multiply, Myspace staff sent a sensitive email to McCombs's mother in Sullivan, Indiana.
It basically said that, while she may have felt like she'd been singled out, she should be assured that it deleted each and every one of these images as it located them. MySpace then threatened to delete her profile if she reposted the pics.
She posted them anyway and told local media. Surprisingly the pictures have stayed up, but the question is how Myspace can delete ordinary pictures on the basis that someone finds them offensive.
There are lots of popular recording artists whose snaps I feel are offensive. Why can't we delete James Blunt? µ

I'm actually close friends with the McCombs family, and while I never had the pleasure of getting to meet BJ (the child mentioned) I have heard story after story, and wanted to clear up a few things that were wrong in this post.
BJ was 18 months old at the time of the fire, and spent the next 17 months in the hospital, but he lived to be 8 years old.
another thing i feel the need to correct, Mrs. McCombs didn't re-post the photos, after the story hit national news, Myspace sent a letter of appology to her, and re-posted the photos for her.
just thought i'd make a few corrections.
I sympathise with that mother, and hope the photos showing the extent of burns to her child remain as a warning reminder, for those who have children of their own, just how ghastly accidental burns can be.

Regarding James Blunt, the writer's comments have no substance. I've looked at James' myspace, found some fantastic music videos, some great pics and other information but absolutely nothing offensive.

Well, if that's going to be MySpace's policy, to delete users upon complaint by an individual...

Then I shall make it my mission in life to have every user of MySpace deleted, in alphabetical order!

Myspace is an american company and in practice american companies would rather upset a family of a burn victim versus some stick-up-the-ass loser who is more likely to sue them over a picture of somebody they don't know nor will ever meet.
should be called www.ourspace-delete-your-stuff-on-a-whim.com.
