A CALIFORNIAN bloke has been charged with a new type of crime with the police claiming he attached a GPS system to his ex-girlfriend's car.

Ara Gabrielyan was charged Tuesday in Los Angeles County with stalking and threatening over a six-month period to kill his former girlfriend.

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, Gabrielyan installed the technology so that he could arrange shock appearances at the bookstore, at the airport, even at her brother's grave site.

A Glendale Police Department told hacks at the paper that this was a true 21st century stalking with the utilisation of technology to track a victim.

Basically he attached a mobile phone to the woman's car with a motion switch that turned on when the car moved. This transmitted a signal each minute to a satellite. Information was then sent to a Web site that allowed Gabrielyan to monitor the woman's location.

Gabrielyan was caught attempting to change the cell phone's battery, police allege.
