UK government takes the WEEE out of IT retailers

Small firms up in arms, incandescent

A TRADE BODY is petitioning the UK government in a bid to persuade it to re-examine what it describes as the "disproportionate" cost of the WEEE regulations.

The Indepedent Trade Assocation of Computing Specialists (ITACS) said that the European directive, which encourages re-cycling of electronic equipment is unfair because it favours giant retailers and penalises smaller ones. The disposal rules cause a 10-24 per cent reduction in price competitiveness, it claims.

Plus ITACS claimed that while small retailers have systems for re-cycling, big retailers don't have equivalent systems in place.

The online petition is here. µ
