Siemens staff work less to save jobs

Union agrees
Mon Sep 26 2005, 07:49
SIEMENS HAS cut a deal with German unions that will see its telephone division workers do less hours in exchange for keeping their jobs.

The phone maker said that it had agreed with its general works council and the powerful IG Metall labour union about a package of measures to make its communications division more competitive.

The big idea is to save as many jobs as possible, the statement said. As part of the agreement, working hours would be cut to 30 hours from 35.8 hours.

Meanwhile Siemens will offer employees the possibility of transferring into a company owned and employment firm to find a new job within or outside Siemens.
