Philips recalls flat panel TVs

Bad case of arcing capacitors
Fri Mar 17 2006, 08:10
TELLY MAKER Philips has ordered the recall of more than 11,800 plasma flat panel televisions after reports of over-arcing capacitors.

The recall only applies to those tellies equipped with Ambilight™ which is a feature which lights up the back wall behind the TV with the predominant colour of the picture.

Apparently when you get a bright light on the side of the wall, that has not always been a feature of Ambilight, could also be the TV catching fire.

So far Philips has received nine reports of this arcing. Due to the fact that the telly is packed with flame retardant materials the only damage has been to the TV itself.

The fault has been noticed in four 42- and 50-inch plasma models with the Ambliight feature, built in 2005 and sold in consumer electronic stores nationwide from June 2005 through January 2006 for between $3,000 and $5,000. It is a fairly simple repair job apparently.
