Friday, 26 September 2008, 09:53

APPLE HAS RELEASED a critical Java upgrade for Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard).

The latest offering by Club Cupertino reportedly improves reliability and compatibility with Java SE 6, J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 on Mac OSX 10.5.4 or later.

The new version of Java offers a number of enhanced security features, including streamlined URL handling that prevents hostile attackers from launching local files. In addition, the upgrade does not allow untrusted application to achieve elevated privileges. Apple also managed to increase a previously imposed encryption cap of 128 bits.

A similar Java update has been made available for Mac OSX 10.4 users. The upgrade reportedly fixes an error checking bug that allowed malicious websites to execute arbitrary code.

As the Inquirer previously reported, Le Pomme was recently forced to fix a shocking total of 33 bugs, 9 of which enabled remote code execution in OSX). ยต
