THE NIGERIAN Government has officially ordered and paid for one million of the hundred dollar laptops which cost about 140 dollars, according to reports.

The One Laptop per Child (OLPC) scheme only needs another four million orders before it starts building the things, according to the OLPC FAQ here.

The deal seems to the first real order for the project that aims to provide Linux-powered laptops to children in developing economies.

The laptop is powered by an AMD processor and runs Linux.

Both Intel and Microsoft have said they think its crap. It's probably pretty good then. They've got their own version which - true to form - costs about three times the price. µ
