Microsoft ponders ads in the Works

Bringing the cost down
Mon Sep 25 2006, 07:59
SOFTWARE megalith Microsoft is pondering running a free, advertising-supported version of its cut down office software, Works.

According to imediaconnection, the move is seen as a counter attack to Google's issuing of a free online version of an Office-style package. Vole Works, which has basic word processing and spreadsheet software, could be shoved online for free. Vole then flogs advertising on it to make up for any lost revenue. Works costs about $50.

A spokesVole said that the company had been mulling for a while about how it could shift Works onto the web.

If it does work, it could also be an interesting model that could be used to peddle Voleware into places that cannot afford its prices, like China, India, Pakistan and the United Kingdom. µ
