Graphics chip sales in Q1 slumped

Aero, aero, who's your lady friend?

FIRST quarter sales of graphics chips were poor, and that's always to be expected.

But according to Jon Peddie, director of the market research firm that bears his name, this time round Q1 wasn't flat, or dropped a little, "it was a thud."

So much for the boost from Microsoft Vista and Aero, then.

Overall desktop market share looks like this, according to figures supplied by the good doctor.

Vendor Q1 2007 Q4 2006
1 Intel 38.7% 28.5%
2 Nvidia 28.5% 37.4%
3 AMD 21.9% 23%
4 Via 6.4% 6.7%
5 SIS 4.3% 4.5%
6 Others <1% <1%

He said that despite the fact the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said chip sales were up in Q1 by 3.2 per cent, graphics chips certainly weren't. Quarter to quarter, sales dropped by 5.5 per cent, while 78.8 million graphics chips shipped.

Another barometer that underlines Vistula hasn't yet done as well as the world+dog hoped. µ
