REPAIRS TO the Asian Internet cables are still five weeks away from being complete.

Communications lines have been partly out of action since the end of last year when a submarine cables, were damaged by a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake off Taiwan.

The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) said that it looks like the repairs would be completed on the last undersea cable by the end of February, rather than the middle of February as they had hoped.

OFTA Director General, Au Man-ho blamed bad weather, technical problems and "other reasons" for causing the delay.

Internet providers have diverted Web traffic and that the delay was not having a significant impact on Internet services at least in Hong Kong.
