OS X isn't Unix

Student bites publisher
Sat Sep 14 2002, 19:32
THREE WEEKS AGO the software book publisher Tim O'Reilly wrote up some anecdotal results of an informal poll in an article entitled "Mac OS X Switcher Stories" . In it, he quoted several respondents who'd switched to Apple's OS X from Linux. He argues that Apple might be wise to target the fast emerging Desktop Linux market.

Now a Comp Sci student has picked up the gauntlet, so to speak, to write a rather spirited and thorough-going rebuttal in defense of Linux. The opposing views of J. Paul Reed can be found at Freshmeat, here.

Which side you'll find more persuasive will likely depend upon what you find more appealing -- the tightly closed integration and polish of Mac OS X... or the power, flexibility, and wide-open freedom of Linux.µ
