HP could hand paedophile £100,000

Do you wanna be in my gang?
Wednesday, 29 October 2008, 15:23

COMPUTER GIANT HP has come under fire for using convicted paedophile Gary Glitter’s 1973 hit single Do You Wanna Touch Me to advertise the firm’s new touch-screen PC, potentially handing him £100,000 in royalties.

HP actually used a Joan Jett cover version of the song in its TV ads which are being aired in the US, but because Glitter penned the song, every time the song is viewed – whether on television or online – the convicted kiddie-fiddler becomes that little bit richer.

It wasn’t long ago that 64 year old Glitter was expelled from Thailand after being banged up for 27 months for committing obscene acts with minors. He was previously convicted of pedophilia in the UK and jailed for four months after admitting he owned a collection of 4,000 hardcore photographs of children being abused. Glitter is currently on the British sex offenders register and in hiding.

Despite the fact Glitter’s songs are no longer played on British radio, they’re still quite popular in the US and the paedophile is said to earn about £200,000 a year from royalties.

Outraged campaigners in the US have demanded that HP pull the TV ads containing the Glitter song, which includes the lyrics "Ev'ry growin' boy needs a little joy, all you do is sit an' stare/Beggin' on my knees, baby won't you please…Right or wrong, don't it turn you on/Can't you see we're wastin' time?/ Do you wanna touch? - Yeah! Do you wanna touch? - Yeah! Do you wanna touch me there? Yeah!"

President of Child Abusewatch.net, Evin Daly, noted the ad was in "poor taste" and showed "a distinct lack of sensitivity."

The ad was also available for viewing online but HP has now said it pulled the links as soon as it was told of the Glitter connection.

Too little, too late µ

Keeping a close eye

I'm gonna dig a little on this one, if HP don't U-turn quickly or something similar...I will make sure never to buy an HP product again.
Seeing as though I'm the guy everyone asks what to buy in my circle of family & friends, this will quickly translate to a few tens of people...I can only hope others will follow.

In defense of HP...

...and myself - being a huge Joan Jett fan, I had no idea that song was originally created by Glitter. And I'm willing to bet that HP thought it was just a Joan Jett song, and that was that.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that, had they known it was a Glitter song, they wouldn't have used it.

Rehabilitation?

Yes, Paul Gadd is undoubtedly a vile man and will be on the sex offenders register for a long time.

On the other hand, rehabilitation and sentencing should be adhered to. Ex convicted criminals have a right to work, and this should not be biased by the fact that too many people get emotionally involved on hearing about certain crimes.

Paul Gadd deserves his cash. He created the song and now reaps the benefits. The fact he's used it to fund an abhorrent lifestyle is not relevant. Life is not fair and frequently the undeserving are unrewarded. Can many of us say we are completely deserving of every benefit we receive?

HP's marketing department will have been well paid for its campaign. Now there's a group of people who didn't deserve what they were paid..

Rubbish

Glitter sold all his royalty rights a few years ago. Any payments now wouldn't go to him.

i'm sick of activism

The powerful sway of obsessive child advocacy and child protection agencies and lobbyists just makes me puke.

It's so paranoid that now if you think a song has entertainment value, you have to find out the whole story of the author. Apparently playing Glitter's music is now the same as promoting pedophilia. This is retarded.

Glitter

Man, I never knew of the Glitter connection for that song. When I first saw the commercial I thought, 'Wow, that was a really cool Joan Jett song that never came back into vogue'. Now I know why. Damn.

The sad part is that if HP is airing the add, Glitter has already received his percentages no matter if it gets pulled or not. Hopefully Jett got something as well.

Get a life

He has served his time why the fuck does everyone keep hounding someone. He will never offended again as he is watched day and night. He did the song before he was convicted so can we all move along. Nothin to see here.

As the mother in law said...

Hate The Man, Not The Music

If he gets royalities who cares, he is going to get them no matter what, might as well enjoy the music.

Michael Jackson "night" on X Factor UK on ITV.

Why did X Factor UK on ITV have a whole night of Michael Jackson songs?

What sort of middle aged man has other people's young boys staying in his bed?

How can ITV put this out for "family entertainment"?
