CORSAIR IS BREAKING IN a new Dominator DDR3 2133MHz 2x1GB kit at TweakTown today. That’s also a first, 2133MHz, a hot new record breaking piece of hardware that’ll take active cooling to work properly. It’s got a 2.0v stock operating voltage, but Cameron only got the 2133MHz speed at 2.1v… you’ll also have to pick your mobo very carefully as some don’t support such high DDR3 memory voltages. It’s a hottie, yes it is. Get it here.
So which of the current graphics marchitectures is more efficient at chewing away pixels? The RV770 or the GT200? PC Games Hardware answered this, sorta, at least in what regards to DX9 performance. Just be careful not to choke on the explanations… heavy duty technical stuff going on there. The boys at PCGH aren’t kidding. It all comes down to choices, and right now, choices… there’s plenty of them. Read the article right here – in English…
Bit Tech is also having its turn with the Acer Aspire One. The gemstone-like mini laptop from the house of broken toys seems to have gotten the keyboard layout right, says Joe, which is where most UMPCs fail. It’s also one of the lightest and cheapest in its class, which give it an instant appeal. You want small? You want cheap? Head over here.
Akasa’s Vortexx Neo is on test at Driver Heaven. It’s a two-slot GPU cooler, vaguely resembling the 4870’s reference cooler. The advantages of two-slot coolers are two-fold. First they move a greater volume of air, secondly, they dump the air out the back of the PC case, which means that there’s no accumulation of heat inside the case. It’s cheap (£19.95) and it performs very well. Go get some.
Supermicro is still the giant maker of workstation and server boards. Traditionally these boards are about stability, but in the case of the X7DWA-N you could say their about “enthusiasts” as PC Review took to the lab with the beast. Running the 5400 Seaburg chipset, the X7DWA-N supports 1600 FSB processors and DDR2-800 FB DIMMs. Using some Harpertowns (2 X5482) PC Review got a decent overclock and some very high performance numbers out of it. Mind you, all the numbers were in data crunching, not gaming, but it does sport two PCIe x16 2.0 slots for your gaming pleasure. Read about it here.
The newly launched 790GX is a tweaked up version of the 780G but it also includes several new technologies to boost power efficiency and overall performance. A bunch of sites have had access to the mobos and have started drawing their own conclusions (and the inevitable comparison to its predecessor). The proposition is sound, in particular for SOHO and HTPCs, as the overall low energy consumption and high level of graphics (for an IGP) will surely make it a winner. Charlie’s already laid out the facts for you, these guys have run the numbers:
