A LAPTOP containing over 5,000 patient records has disappeared from a hospital.
The Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook was last seen in the outpatients department of Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley, West Midlands, on January 8.
The apparent theft has been revealed as all 5,123 anticoagulation patients receive letters notifying them of the potential security breach.
The information on the machine is protected by a username and password. What guarantees the security of the data a little more is the fact that the thief was probably more interested in the hardware than the data it contains.
Anyone who was milling about in the hospital on the afternoon of January the ninth or who has been offered a cheap laptop by a bloke down the pub is ivited to contact Dudley plod on 0845 113 5000." µ
all these data loss situations are making me wonder, have all these large corporations and government agencies converted all their computers to laptops??
I don't for the life of me know why management types think having their workers being able to roam around with all their sensitive information slung over their shoulders.
Hospitals need to realise that data privacy and security is as important to them as Defense departments.

Too many cases of Hospital employees sharing passwords, lost laptops with patient and/or corporate data on it, and not being able to get data immediately are all issues that happen everywhere.

Having a desktop that never has any data or cache on it like a Sun Ray Virtual Display Device, and getting access to your data which is securley locked up in the Datacentre is perfect for hospitals.

There are also hospitals around the world that use Sun Ray Virtual Display clients in their Intensive Care Units, as well as in Staff Rooms, Around the Wards, and even in Patient Rooms. All Clinicians have to do is insert their smartcard and they get their Desktop immediately.

How does this keep happening??!!!!!!
I think in this world there are far too many people using computers, who just don't know anything about them.
These are the people whos PC get infected and turned into botnets.
These are the people who don't know what a laptop leash is for...
These are the people who didn't read The Inq and read about free things like TrueCrypt!

These are the people with my personal data!

Aaaaargh!
