Sun memory is better? Kind of like the audio cables hand-woven of the finest rare-earth metals, blessed by a virgin under a new moon, give clearer audio than "ordinary" cables made by competent manufacturers? Sure it's better than memory built by "Joe's Garage-Special Memory Modules and Car Repair". But is it better than the good stuff you and I can buy from quality manufacturers off the web?
Crucial and Kingston make memory modules under some of the strictest standards in the industry, using the same chips as Sun, and in fact, OEM some of their memory to big companies, I'm lead to believe, that charge three times as much for it (because it's "validated" I suppose). Am I supposed to believe that Sun does a better job than Micron building memory modules with Micron's own chips?
The panic-stricken Sun employee, of course, conveniently forgets to make the distinction between quality after-market memory and crappy stuff pulled out of the bargain bin. The former being perfectly acceptable in a high-availability server, and the latter probably used in the single case of problems he mentioned.
Customers need to stand up for their rights. They need to demand that Sun, HP, etc. certify a list of second-source memory that is acknowledged to be "good enough" to be used in their servers. Considering Crucial and Kingston probably make the memory for Sun anyway (just a guess -- I have no inside information), this doesn't seem like such a big deal.
And where can I get some of this FRUID? Sounds like a fruity health drink. I'm thirsty after all this typing.
Subject: An answer to Mr Giorgos Vasileiou
As an answer to Mr Giorgos Vasileiou:
I don't know if you are from Greece or you "escaped" from the country of your ancestors early enough, but instead of ridiculizing Chomsky and anyone who claims that CIA is interfering a bit too much in other countries, just ask your father or your grand-father how the civil war started in their country.
Ask them how the supporters of the nazis after the war suddenly became the good guys killing the "bad guys" who happened to be leftists and had defended their country against the fascists.
Also ask them what a nice time they had during the CIA organised and imposed dictatorship of 1967-1974 and why tens of thousands of their co-patriots lived in exile or on deserted islands for many years.
No, I am not another Chomskyite; I am someone who has read history and the archives of USA describe these events very vividlly. Stop geting your information only from CNN and ABC. Try reading someother things too and then you'll probably understand what is happening around you.
Nikolaos Gryspolakis
P.S. I know that this issue is irrelevant with the inquirer but I couldn't help it! Especially when it comes from my co-patriot. µ
