Metal thieves shut networks

Copper stolen... call coppers
Friday, 11 July 2008, 14:01

CABLE AND WIRELESS is blaming the crash of Sainsbury's website on thieves nicking the copper from a computer network centre run by the outfit in Watford.

During the raid important gear was nicked, but Inspector Knacker of the Yard believes that the thieves were more interested in copper wire in the cabling. Rising copper prices have made scrap metal theft an attractive proposition for thieves as it has a high resale value.

Sainsbury's said that punters unable to gain access to its groceries website for a day.

Officially Cable and Wireless has put the problem down to 'network issues' although we are not sure if having your network cable stolen counts as an 'issue'.

Other than Sainsbury's a number of other clients who used the centre for managed hosting services were also taken down.

Still it makes a better excuse than 'sorry guv we tipped lager on the server during an all-night game of beer pong'. µ

Don't laugh...

...they may only be taking the metal now, but mark my words - they'll be back for our grunge and our third-wave ska soon.

Not the only one

20 years ago at a Ferranti factory in Edinburgh we came in one morning to find all the power off.

We were told that thieves had sawed off the massive copper earth rods for the entire factory. Seemingly these were in a wee shed at the far end of the car park and they had no trouble breaking in and nicking the thick rods.

Must of got a packet for them.

Good job none of the 200 night-shift workers got electrocuted...
