Open-source routers are pants

BAE SYSTEMS engineer Aaron Anderer has warned that the current ranges of open-source routers that are hitting the shops are about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Speaking to IT Week, Anderer said that firms hoping to save a bit of cash by using open-source routers are going to be disappointed. Apparently, they are a bugger to configure and can't handle large amounts of traffic.

Anderer said many of the proprietary features in dedicated routers makes life easier for firms. There are advantages for smaller firms in using Cisco equipment including the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), which is simple to set up and can be expanded for use on large networks, he said.
