Record industry decides to compete with online sales
Thu Jul 06 2006, 08:51
THE WORLD'S biggest record company has decided that it is going to compete with digital downloading rather than sit and watch its market share dwindle.

Universal said that it will change its packaging so that CDs will either come in deluxe editions down or cheap cardboard sleeves.

A spokesUniversal pointed out that CDs had not had a marketing re-think for nearly 20 years, a situation which would not have been contemplated with any other product.

First thing to go will be the jewel boxes that spontaneously destroy themselves when you open them for the first time. These will be replaced by something more strong and durable.

Another category will be deluxe CDs which will sell with all sorts of goodies. The prices for the deluxe CDs with be just under €20, the standard CD will be €5 and the basic CD in a cardboard cover will be €9.99.
