CHIPZILLA is opening a $3 billion factory in Arizona which will churn out the new 45 nanometre chips by Christmas.

Intel and rivals AMD currently make their most advanced chips on 65-nanometre technology, and both companies are spending heavily to outfit their factories with the cutting-edge equipment and technologies needed to make 45-nanometre chips.

However it looks like Intel is at least six months ahead of AMD as it has opened the new million-square-foot factory, with more than 1,000 workers.

According to AP the plant will have chips out in November.

Intel wants to spend up to $8 billion on upgrading or building factories for 45-nanometre chips.

That figure includes the Arizona factory, up to $3.5 billion for a new factory in Kiryat Gat, Israel and $1.5 billion to retool an existing facility in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, both of which are to open next year. ยต

definition of intel

People define intel as a platform company with fabs, however, IMO intel is best defined as a fab company with platforms.
