AVG AV8 tips up

Have to pay for it, though
Thursday, 28 February 2008, 07:45

AVG has released version 8 of its popular Anti-Virus Edition.

The security outfit, formerly known as Grisoft, has jacked some major improvements under the bonnet of this version. Stand alone tools such as AVG Anti-Spyware, AVG Anti-Rootkit, and LinkScanner have been integrated and there is a new look and feel to the beast.

According to a press release, version 8 fixes some of the problems that AVG has suffered from, such as system slow downs that are typical for real-time shields.

Users will be warned if the links that they are visiting are unsafe before they click on them and on-demand file updates will be available free for the first time.

However the outfit has so far not released a free Version 8 although AVG said it is thinking about it.

If it does one of the few things that the free edition will not have, which is available to those who pay for the product is tech support particularly for newer multiprocessor chips. The paid for version also has better scheduling capabilities.

It is worth noting that AVG is successful because of its free edition which has drawn many companies into buying the paid version. µ

it is also popular because of quality

for me AVG is one the best if not best AV software in the world. Many tests showed that. And when you know that you can have excellent basic AV protection for free, then it makes it even better in my eyes. This my personal opinion as admin in big company where we use Norton and I am using AVG last three years. With AVG not a single problem, with Norton almost every 3 months.I am still trying to push my company to ditch Norton for AVG. And would like to thanks to the Grisoft team to protect my personal PCs in the last 3 years.

PS: Don't start flame wars.It was my personal opinion. Thanks.

AVG eah

AVG is pretty good for being free, i also like Avast which is pretty good for being free as well. Avast ram scan is pretty nice as well as the boot time scan which is good as your not in windows Bitdefender is one of the best imo although it is nothing but free!

I agree

I agree, AVG is simply the best scanner there is.
Tried many of them, all fail to do their job properly.
The number of times a virus turns off Norton is a joke.
I'm using AVG on my system and it never gave any problems at all.
Nothing comes close to it.

Quality and Price

I have to substantially agree with the forgoing comments. I became aware of avg through it's free for home use program.

I implore avg to release an updated free version as well.

While the first commenter noted he/she is still trying to push the company to the paid for product I am 'the decider' in my organization and did indeed move our machines from McAfee to AVG as a result of it being a superior product in my opinion.

If I'm push to another vendors freebie who knows... Yeah that's a veiled threat lol:) But in all seriousness thank you grisoft. It's been more than a pleasure over the years and I hope it continues.

you go AVG

I also started using the free version of AVG and was so impressed with its reliability, low system resource utilization, and effectiveness that I have purchased 3 two-year subscriptions for personal use. So I guess free was a good business model after all! Symantec is a greater threat to world stability than terrorism; I will never give them another cent for their garbage software.

Problems

Since the introduction of AVG 8.0 we have never had so much problem as now. With Windows Vista it's crime. It seems that 8.0 has been released to early.

AVG 8

AVG is a fantastic anti-virus software with many different options to the default user without doubt AVG provides a very well composed sevice detection of threats is nearly instant and deals with them very efficiently by its provided Virus Vault, from my point of view Norton is the worst Anti-virus software around and this can be noticed by the poor selling of its product, without doubt PC World for example will provide Norton with every PC they sell this is due to pure situation that the anti-virus software is rubbish and does not provide an additional protection sevice due to this, i would recommend that no one should use Norton unless they want viruses in there system 32 folder.

AVG 8 is rubbish

I have installed AVG on two machines - one running Vista and one XP. On both systems this new release is a disaster

On the Vista system it interferes with the printing of IE pages unless you reduce IE security to an unacceptable level

On XP it slows the system down horrendously

I have previously used AVG as a clean and easy to use anti-virus. The upgraded version is clunky, clumsy and bug ridden. I will be changing to komodo or avast anti virus
