Holey Adobe hands users free movie downloads

Up the Amazon, no paddle required
Monday, 29 September 2008, 14:09

ADOBE HAS unwittingly given users free access to streaming video content on Amazon.com.

A hole in Adobe's Flash routine allows users to grab the content.

BT's Insecurity expert Bruce Schneier, told Reuters there was a "fundamental flaw" in the Adobe design. "This was designed stupidly," he said.

Judging by the long and sorry tale on Reuters' pages here, the Snafu is a good excuse for self-appointed industry spokesfolk to demand DRM everywhere. ยต

What a "hole"

The only hole is in the arguing of this so called expert.

While adobe's streams are not "encrypted", anyone who has been paying attention to DRM ever since it existed know that "encryption" isn't much of a useful thing if you're sending it to a computer to be decrypted anyway!

Sadly Adobe does listen to crackpots like this and a so called "security layer" is planned for Flash 10.

I guess it'll at least make Intel and AMD happy to burn some more useless CPU cycles on that one..
