AMD-Microsoft: multiple OSes aboot

Clawhammer morsels while we wait
Wed Apr 24 2002, 08:19
WE'LL COVER the Dirk Meyer announcement AMD will make later today, but in the meantime here's a little more Hammer morsels to chew on.

Multiple versions of 64-bit Windows for AMD? Well, we'd expect to see one for the home, one for the professional market and a server version too.

The code base for such multiple versions is essentially very similar - a little bit of tweaking needed just to make them that little bit different for extra sales.

So if AMD does introduce Clawhammer on October 28th, Microsoft ought to be able to get all three versions into its distribution and retail channel for that date.

Which could imply that by January next year, there will be wide support for AMD's Hammer aboot.

In other news, Vans Hardware is suggesting that MS is putting pressure on Intel to adopt an X86-64 model. That's here.

And here's Microsoft's own page on WOW64, mentioned in the memo we published the other day.
