Perfect Dark Zero and freshly painted fingernails revealed

The remaking of stars
Sunday, 27 November 2005, 08:02
JOANNA Dark's new look has undergone considerable controversy and revision. Those freshly painted fingernails continue to draw flak. How many action heroes (read: conscientious mass murderers) have time to carry around a bottle of acetone and sit down for a new coat every fifteen minutes?

What strikes me though is her likeness to Leeloo from the 5th Element, as played by Milla Jovovich. Check out that orange hair and the big silver gun. I'm not saying that they've intentionally stomped on the intellectual property of Milla's face. But let's look at another similarity or two.

Part of Joanna's mission is to become the perfect being, er... I mean agent. Leeloo is a genetically perfect alien sent to earth to copulate with Bruce Willis and thereby save the human race. I guess they're saying that the horrors of war are okay as long as you balance it out with a little nookie.

A religious theme runs through these stories too. Leeloo is the messianic figure for a secret order of monks, and Joanna was named after Joan of Arc (schizophrenic, but hardcore nonetheless).

So, they both have orange hair. They both save the earth, and there are lots of aliens and divine overtones in both stories. I'm not crying foul. I think it's great that video game and movie producers have found a niche market that appeals to the punky E.T. loving demographic.

Besides, if they can slap a pair of breasts on Indiana Jones and call Laura Croft an original character, then they can do the same with Leeloo, right? µ
