XBox 360 overhaul come August

BD player, new graphics chip
Mon May 05 2008, 11:47

ACCORDING TO KNOW-IT-ALL EDN newspaper in China, Pegatron Technology (bastard offspring of Asustek, in case you’re wondering), has managed to grab the highly-denied “Blu-Ray for Xbox360” deal of the year.

We imagine Microsoft denied the existence of such unit, not to shield its upcoming launch from the competition’s prying marketeers, but rather because its staff were responding in default “mirror” mode whereby hacks that asked the Vole if they had plans for a BD add-on, they received a 100% flat/honest “No”. True. All things considered, it won’t be an add-on.

The newspaper adds that Pegatron will assemble Microsoft’s console with the in-built BD player, with units hitting the market in Q3/2008 – Mid-summer, as it were.

This goes head-on with Dean Takahashi’s info on the Xbox 360 “Jasper” platform that is scheduled for August of this year. We'd already mentioned this platform over here, btw. The Jasper will feature a shrunken 65nm ATI graphics core and “smaller memory chips”. This does make more sense if you’re using the new GPU core to aid you in decoding HD on Blu-ray, too.

So that’s about it, major Xbox 360 platform overhaul coming this summer, with some time to spare for Christmas - Blu-ray, faster graphics and what is likely to be an all-round cooler console – and the thing is assembled by Pegatron Technology.

This Xbox 360 "Ultra" (our word, not the Vole's) should be able to do a bit more than trail the PS3. Should make for an interesting holiday season this year. µ

to the real NOOB

For the last poster claiming the 'PoS3' was a 3rd gen console vs he the Xbox 360 being 2nd gen just because its the 3rd Playstation, I must ask are you really that much of a noob or just trolling? By your definition the Nintendo Wiiiii is a 5th gen console leaving all of the others in the dust. (NES -> SNES -> N-64 -> Gamecube -> Wiiiii) Right. Now you go back to YOUR corner. Its well known that in side-by side comparisons that there is little to no difference in graphics quality of games between the two. In fact, in a majority of games the Xbox 360 is the superior in graphics quality.

IR FTW

If 360 comes out with Bluray, HDMI, quieter drive and fans, I will get it no question.

I woulda probably broken down and gone PS3 by now, but there's no decent IR solution for PS3 (the hokey ones out there now can't power on/off via remote), and 360 is extremely well-supported by Harmony..

NOOBs

By the Way you NOOBs the 360 is only a second generation console unlike the PS3 which is a third generation console so bring on the next xbox and then compare it to the PS3 .

Uber and out!!!!

To all those RE: different models available...

... er, yes. As we all know, Sony only realeased one, international, version of it's laptop and never varied in different territories either. Right?

Nice one. Back in your corners... go on, off you go...

With regards 'breaking the console law' - cobblers. Having the drive or not witll not limit which games you can play, just whether or not you can play BR movies.

Somehow I think not

In your article you state that the console will do more than just trail the PS3. Other than gaining a Blu-Ray drive, what else is it gaining? The graphics chip will essentially be a die-shrink and the memory will be as well. If they make any radical changes, games will be available for one special type of XBox 360 as games developers try to get more power from the system, leading to games working on one xbox and not working/looking different on another which leads you to console gaming being as complicated as PC gaming. Perhaps this "New" graphics chip is merely a fix for the RROD? A graphics chip that doesn't fail after x number of service hours?

N/A

It kind of negates the main benefit of a console if they keep upgrading the damn things with new functionality, the launch 360 buyers who thought they were getting the complete system must feel screwed.

i will hold my fire for now

i knew that is gonna happen when M$ left HD-DVD camp, god damn M$

i will hold my gun on the ps3, sorry sony, its time to play change of heart, lets just wait till the year ends, see if xbox have blu-ray, and a slim down ps3. (both would be temping, and if the price is right.)

rather interesting, i will not buy anything more console at this point, just wait and see.

i will just stick with my pc and wii for now.

Quiet?

I will only buy this if there is a NOTICEABLE drop in the sound levels emanating from the internal drive. I build some powerful but quiet PC's and in my game room the XBOX 360 is the loudest device in the room out of a total of 5 PC's!

WrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Maddening!

Shouldn't it be

the XBox 360 Ub3r 1337 so Sony doesn't eat our console for lunch because we backed a one CE pony standard.

I sure hope this redesign fixes the 8%-32% (depending on whose numbers you believe) failure rate.

basic/premium/business/ultimate

Hmm .. 360 is spawning as many versions as windows vista : arcade, basic, elite and now ultimate or something. they shud also launch a business version which doesnt play games.

"Faster graphics" ...err no.

It's NOT a new faster GPU core, it's the exact same, just smaller.

Stop spreading crap as usual. Why cant the INQ hire real journalists? too expensive, or too intelligent for the readers?

XBOX 720 then?

Fine! They wanted to be out in the shelves before Sony's PS3 and now they have to make an XBOX720 to catch up? So finally this means breaking console law, being full compatible and have same features over the lifetime. Crazy Microsoft, the sales showing now what people think. PS3's worldwide sales overtook XBOX360 sales despite XBOX360 Arcade's Price drop. Even in US!!! The XBOX is doomed...
In 12 months also in cumulitative sales the PS3 will have overtaken the XBOX.

Did I say 'laptop'?

I meant 'console', obviously.

Although that PS3 laptop is pretty nifty...

no new things

I hardly doubt that the "new" GFXchip will be faster then the "old" one. Maybe some new decoding properties having to cope with the Blue-Ray but definetily no faster then the rest of the 360's. That would just go against the nature of gaming consoles. Maybe nintendo has released some memorymodules to be added later on but releasing a new version that makes the console faster is a load of s**t. Although even adding the Blue-Ray could put the other 360 owners in difficult position if some gamecompanys start to release games on the BD instead of the DVD. Then there would be a need for addon Blue-Ray drives.

What's The Point

In buying that come around 210 when MS would probably be reveiling the next XBOX 720 or whatever,

Everything knew it was the GPU (which is underneth the DVD-ROM) that was bricking consoles. This is to cash in on the last train to still losing the so called console war. And they have to go Blu-Ray to keep in that section of the market you know the 1 MS brag that there machine is a full multimedia console.

Without Blu-Ray support noooooooooooooooo ya not! And I am not a fanboy I used to own a 360 might even get a new Sku Arcade near to x-mas. But 1 thing is for sure if people have premiums or elites or arcades now MS should clear the DRM and let everyone get there content they bought without that "I have to be online" s*** to make it work.

Thats what pi**ed me off and thats why I changed to PS3 hardly no DRM on content.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
