Sega loses source code to games

ANCIENT VIDEO GAMES are making a comeback thanks to consoles, such as the Xbox360, however the biggest name frrom the past, Sega is unable to compete.

According to Sega of America's president Simon Jeffery, it is proving impossible to find any of the source code for the System 16 or System 24.

In an interview with Kotatu, Jeffery said that while the older games had done well when they could find the source code, the company had moved so many times over the years many of the games had been lost.

The outfit had looked down the back of the sofa, and could not remember where it had seen the code last.

Sega preferred to work from the source code he said, particularly as Vole demanded that the graphics be updated before it allowed the games to be played on its XBox360 Live service. µ

Duh?

They should start from scratch with new code if they are writing for a completely different console rather than being lazy.

If they're that bothered, surely they can decompile the old stuff?

What a complete load of rubbish!Microsoft is capitalizing on the popularity of classic games.. not driving it. Classic gamers have nothing to thank the Vole, nor their console for.

My thanks lie with the makers of MAME and other console emulators. Without their success, I doubt that any of the vultures would bother circling the bones of long-dead platforms looking to make a quick and easy buck.

Want Sega? Get a Wii...

Most of the Sega classics are all on the Wii these days. Why bother with the Xbox 360, when you can play the original on the Wii?

Not that Sega stuff excites me - I'm more into the C64 games, personally. 8)

Shining Force

If you're talking SEGA, you're talking shining force.

If SEGA gets a fallout 3 graphics, Knight of the Old Republic style shining force game. Everything that the company ever did wrong will be made right.

Heck, crossbreed sonic with shinobi and you get one wicked hedgehog innit.

These things do not need old code with new graphics...they need a completely new code.

I reckon he's spinning

How on earth would having the source code to an old sprite scaling game allow you to improve the graphics? The code is likely all assembler given its age and will be entirely geared towards the System 16/24 sprite scaling architecture. None of which would translate to the 360's architecture. It would be much quicker and easier to either emulate the game or re-write it from scratch (and re-writing it would make it much easier to update the graphics). 

On the subject of updating graphics, I'm not aware of any rule that requires classic games to have improved graphics. Off the top of my head TMNT, Galaga, Super Contra, etc all have their original graphics intact. 

I think a more plausible explanation is that Sega have have been almost universally shit since the death of the Dreamcast and they don't want to remind people of the great games they used to make so they're making excuses for not releasing old games on the 360. 

Besides, we've had Outrun ported umpteen times, how about some original Sega Rally, Daytona, Virtua Fighter 2, etc from Sega's more recent arcade machines?

Poor SEGA Very Poor

I saw the vid interview he stated that SEGA liked to work with code. You'd think that such classics would be kept inside a vault because them being well classics worth re-creating.

He was also on about these classics needed to be polished for XBOX 360 Arcade where as PSN they do not. Apparently there going to mine them on PSN.
