STUDENTS FROM Chandigarh won a competition for a pipe crawler, making a machine that got to the finishing line in just under five seconds.

The kids were competing in Techfast 2006, held here in Mumbai and beat a team of other students from all across India in a contest called the Galactic Recovery Instrumentation Probe (GRIP).

This contest is associated with the International Space Station. The scenario is that an important fuel cell has been lost and the kids had to make a wired or wireless remote controlled machine, which can cross a grid 1250mm high, collect a cylinder and put it in a special container.

According to the Times of India, the runners up got to the finishing line in 5.6 and 5.7 seconds respectively.

Details of GRID and the other competitions during the techfest can be found here.
