PHILIPS HAS UNVEILED the world's first ever rollable display pocket e-Reader, the Readius.

The Readius is able to unroll its display to a scale greater than the device itself. The 320x240 pixel screen, which is five inches, provides "paper-like" viewing comfort with a decent contrast radio for applications that need a lot of reading, such as text, graphics and electronic maps.

This product however is just a prototype, created in order to demonstrate the viability of the rollable display concept, says creator Polymer Vision.

Polymer Vision CEO Karl McGoldrick reckons that having thin and flexible displays has its advantages, but the only way to make the most of the size is to make the displays rollable. He believes that the Readius demonstrates that pretty well, the step that he and his company have taken being "a major step further towards product and market."

So you'll have to wait a little while, yet. µ
