AMD and Broadcom Serverworks chipset looms

Computex 2004

AMD AND FIC ANNOUNCED a new partnership today. The badly kept secret of the wedding is finally out officially, and the agreement was 'signed' today by Dirk Meyer of AMD and Thomas Lagatta of Broadcom. It is supposed to be a multi-year, multi-generational tie-up, not a single product.

No details of chipsets were announced, but since they have been on the roadmaps since last fall, expect something soon, and unofficial probably a bit before. A month or 2 out would not be out of line.

Look for broadcom to bring things like integrated I/O, storage contol, and converged fabric networking. Also, more interestingly, Broadcom mentioned that they may be helping AMD design memory controllers. The reason that is something to watch is because the controller is on the chip itself. Doesn't that open up a can of worms.....

Here is a bad picture of Dirk and Thomas covered by photographers.
