Carphone's Big Brother exit welcomed by London Mayor

Livingstone backs BB pull-out
Friday, 19 January 2007, 10:57
UK MOBILE PHONE retail giant Carphone Warehouse's decision to pull its advertising sponsorship for "reality" TV show Big Brother has won the approval of London Mayor Ken Liivingstone.

Carphone boss Charles Dunstone personally waded into the situation, speaking to Channel 4 bosses, according to several reports.

Yesterday, The Guardian quoted Dunstone as saying housemates' behaviour had been "entirely at odds" with Carphone's values. The show has whipped up a publicity storm with some watchers suggesting that contestants had behaved in a racist manner towards Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty. Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has reported tens of thousands of complaints.

That decision was welcomed by London's loquacious Mayor and he added that Carphone's decision "should stand until the present situation on the show is ended". µ
