Asus follows Shuttle idea, goes for bareboards

Thin end of a tiny wedge?
Wed Nov 27 2002, 09:14
WELL INFORMED FOLK in Norway have reported that Asus -- one of the tier one motherboard manufacturers -- is about to introduce its own kind of bare bone systems.

From what we understand , Asus' Shuttle like system is going to measure 36x28x9 cm and will use SIS 651 chipset with integrated graohics inside.

This implementation uses P4 processors and DDR memory and Asus will include a controller for Smart media, Memory Stick, Multimedia Card, Secure Digital Card, port for PCMCIA-cards, FireWire-port, Hi-Speed USB-port, 5.1-channel sound controller, standard D-Sub-controller TV-out and Lab card. What a list!

There will be room for a CD or DVD ROM, we understood from our limited grasp of the Norwegian language.

We still don't know about availability of these bare bone systems or their actual price, and we think Asus might have an uphill struggle wresting market share from the now very well established Shuttle.

We assume that many other manufacturers are watching the rise and rise of the tiny PCs with much interest.
