PE firm eyes up notebook manufacturers

Spare change?
Wed Dec 20 2006, 10:39
WISTRON AND Compal, two of the largest original design manufacturers (ODMs) of notebooks worldwide, have denied they've been approached for takeover by private equity fund GS Capital Partners.

ODMs like Compal, Wistron and Quanta are responsible for the vast majority of notebooks sold worldwide by multinationals like Dell, HP, Apple and others.

The Taipei Times said that while Wistron and Compal deny the advances, GS Capital Partners has loose change of $2 billion and is anxious to acquire a major Taiwanese firm.

The Carlyle Group has loose change of over $5.4 billion and wants to take over packaging and testing firm Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE). µ
