Symantec looks for bad behaviour

SECURITY vendor Symantec has bought anti-worm and anti-phishing company WholeSecurity for an undisclosed sum.

WholeSecurity's software blocks attacks based on behaviour rather than the normal approach of pattern recognition. Its Confidence Online Phish Finder is part of eBay's toolbar.

Symantec will use WholeSecurity's technology against worms and zero day attacks that hit before a patch can be issued.

Symantec clearly subscribes to the fear that conventional scanning software leaves a window of vulnerability in otherwise well protected corporate defences. Behaviour blocking offers an arguably more intelligent layer of protection onto networks. µ
