Coolthreads: Dedicated follower of fashion?

A CHIP that Sun Microsystems said will support 64 threads has taped out and will be available in systems in the second half of next year.

The firm said its UltraSPARC T2 with added Coolthreads tech happened late last month, and will provide twice the performance of the T1 but without any additional power consumption.

Although Sun gave few hard details of the architecture of the chip, it claimed that improvements to the design meant it would have many years lead over its competition.
