HP sued for $100 million by Cornell

CPU patent infringment alleged
Sunday, 6 January 2002, 13:24
CORNELL UNIVERSITY IS TAKING legal action against Hewlett Packard for $100 million in damages for alleged patent infringement.

The case, reported by Associated Press on Friday, relates to a patent filed by a Cornell professor called HC Tong for a method of boosting throughput of CPUs with multiple functional units.

That gives high instruction execution rates, and Cornell appears to be alleging that HP uses the same technology for its CPUs.

The case was filed in Syracuse just before the New Year, and appears to relate to a patent granted to Cornell in 1989, details of which you can find at the Delphion patent record site, here.
